Yoga & Meditations
My Meditation Journey
I came to learn meditation out of desperation. It was 1992 and I was in my first year at university. Living in a big city, far from home and I hadn't yet, made any close connections. I was profoundly lonely and scared. I did what a lot of people do when they try to cope with strong emotional feelings - I hid in my room and numbed myself in unhealthy ways. Thankfully, one lonely night while studying in the library, I stumbled upon a section of books on the subject of "Eastern Philosophy" and there, I found a book on meditation. I learned about a style of meditation called, "Trataka." This style of meditation initially involves starting at an external object like a flickering candle. Then the practitioner takes the candle from external to an internal image. I practiced this twice a day for many weeks. Eventually, the most amazing thing happened: I stopped feeling lonely. Meditation, I believe, saved my life.
Years later, I began teaching meditation to friends, family, students, and then to organizations and corporations. Eventually I opened a yoga and meditation studio. Meditation remains an important practice for me. My recorded meditations can be found on Insight Timer. I have also put many of these meditations on my YouTube channel.
If you are looking for somebody to present to your organization or corporation on the topic of meditation or mindfulness, let me know.
My Yoga Journey
I am an E-RYT 500 hour yoga teacher. My journey to yoga was not typical. I came to yoga with a meditation background (as above). In 2014 my wife and I started a yoga studio called the Ekahi Center for Yoga and Mindfulness. I taught some meditation classes and we hired instructors to teach yoga. We also started a yoga teacher school and that's how I started to do a deep dive into hatha yoga (Kripalu). While I don't teach yoga classes regularly anymore, I do teach yoga to my patients and I am still part of yoga teacher trainings where I teach anatomy, yoga history, and meditations.
I do post selected yoga topics as they relate to asana (poses) and rehabilitation. I think the asanas are a great way to maintain and improve flexibility, strength, and balance.
